Still The King Cover Art - 2016 Grammy Nominee for Best Recording Package

We recently had the pleasure of working with our favorite tall Texan, Ray Benson, and Asleep at the Wheel again on another amazing project: Still The King, Celebrating the Music of Bob Wills and his Texas Playboys. We felt that “the fondest of tributes to the man justly billed as the King of Western Swing” (New York Times) should be celebrated as Mr. Wills, himself, would have: with a box of stogies. The packaging design is reminiscent of a vintage cigar box, complete with emboss, tax stamp, seal sticker and, as always, a hidden goodie…. it, like the music, was a labor of love, and we hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we loved killing ourselves over it. It’s now available everywhere. Go download it on iTunes, order a hard copy at AsleepAtTheWheel.com and tell your friends… ALL of them.

Nashville Gab: Wynonna Judd officially has the best tour poster ever

Wynonna Judd Tour Poster 2014 - Backstage Design Studio w/ Latocki Team CreativeBy Shannon at NashvilleGab.com

So Wynonna Judd has officially set the bar for tour posters. How friggin’ cute is the new poster for her just announced Wynonna and Friends: Stories & Songtour? It kind of reminds me of the cool Taylor Swift poster the California casino had designed for her when she played there a while back. I want one (gotta have one) to frame and hang on my wall. Amazing.

Shauna Dodds and Sarah Dodds Backstage Design Studio

Not everyone can say they’ve bested David Bowie, Jay Z and Metallica for a Grammy Award, but sisters Sarah and Shauna Dodds can. The talented duo behind graphic design firm Backstage Design Studio won the music industry’s highest honor for Best Recording Package with their album concept forReckless Kelly’s Long Night Moon, beating the aforementioned artists as well as the alternative music group Geneseo. The native Texans, who were nominated for the award in 2012 with another Reckless Kelly album, Good Luck & True Love, were shocked—and ecstatic—to hear the presenter utter their names. After making their way to the stage, the first words out of Sarah’s mouth were, “Holy crap, Cyndi Lauper’s here.” The 10-year-old studio, where Shauna, 34, is the “design maven” and Sarah, 33, is the “illustration goddess,” has a client list that includes Kris Kristofferson, Slaid Cleaves, Emily Bell and Wheeler Brothers. Long Night Moon, however, is special in that it marks the pair’s 100th album cover and has given the duo a career-making turn. “Once they called out our name, everything changed,” says Sarah. Now the phone rings off the hook, and the Dodds are swamped with requests. With only three people on their team, they’ve had to start a waiting list for their services. “It’s a great problem to have,” adds Shauna.

The Cover Cove: The 2014 Grammy Nominees – Best Recording Package

Wednesday, January 8th, 2014

One of the consistently overlooked categories at the Grammy Awards is Best Recording Packaging. This category is gives recognition to the art directors, photographers and artists who create the memorable or creative packaging for non-classical music releases. Since Best Recording Packaging fits the theme of this blog, I figured that it would be fun to take a close look at the nominees. The nominated albums are by Jay-Z, Metallica, Geneseo,  Reckless Kelly, and David Bowie.

2. Reckless Kelly – Long Night Moon
Sarah Dodds & Shauna Dodds, art directors

Long Night Moon is a fantastic example of celestial Victorian art. The packaging unfolds to a complete night and day theme. Some of the astral artwork glows in the dark, and there are also secret codes and messages.  Sisters Shauna and Sarah Dodds really outdid themselves.

The 12-panel poster fold-out insert features a vintage-style lunar map with invisible glow-in-the-dark art hidden throughout. Each of the moons encircling the Lunar Map represent a date of relevance to Reckless Kelly and Long Night Moon, with the specific moon that graced the night sky on that very date, the Shoshone Indian name for that moon phase, and the GPS location of the event. Hidden within the design is a code to unlock the chords to all the tracks on the record, a story created from mixmatched lyrics from the record, an explanation of what the Long Night Moon is, a Homeric Hymn, constellations and a link to visit for unlocking ALL the secrets online.

Little known facts:

1. The stars included in the artwork are not randomly placed – but rather, in their true astronomical alignment to one another. If you know your constellations, you may likely find them, throughout.

2. The moon phases on the lunar map that line the outer rim represent the actual moon phase that lit the sky on that specific date and place.

3. The numbers within the ‘swirls’ of the lunar map also represent a secret code.

4. The moon phases included on the back cover represent the moon phase from the date that each track was written. The dates for these are included on the Lunar Map.

5. Along the bottom of the inner spread, you can find the Austin city lights on the left with headlights departing toward the mountains on the far right. This, as well as the entirety of the packaging design is a nod to the traveling theme of the record, and the lyrics of “Long Night Moon”: Sleepless nights where the stars above are drowned out by the city lights / and I wonder why I keep torturing my soul beneath this urban sky / but in my mind I know I’ll be home soon / surrounded by the winter beneath the Long Night Moon.

6. The Long Night Moon for 2013 is December 16th.

7. If you have the physical copy of the packaging, you can visit RecklessKelly.com/CrackTheCode to . . . crack the code.

While Back Wednesday: Wheeler Brothers / Gold Boots Glitter

Wednesday, November 6th, 2013

A while back, around the beginning of the year, we had the pleasure of working with the Wheeler Brothers on their new record, Gold Boots Glitter. The guys had what everyone thought were two separate and conflicting concepts: one being this really rad glitter-filled jewel case cover and felt letters that Patrick had literally taken an iPhone photo of, and the other being this amazing painting by Molly Brau. To us, however, the two melded together seamlessly.

What resulted was a 10-panel digi with custom die cut pup-up and glitter-coated (literally) sleeve. To see it in all it’s glory, check out the vine below.

While Back Wednesday: Granger Smith / Earl Dibbles Jr Tour Poster

So, a while back, Granger’s people came to us to design a poster for him and his buddy, Earl Dibbles Jr. I can’t lie – the resemblance is uncanny.

Throwback Thursday: The Britt Lloyd Band / Unlabeled

Thursday, October 10th, 2013

It’s so much fun pulling these old packaging designs out of the archives to shine a little light on them. This classic Backstage Design Studio gem was for The Britt Lloyd Band‘s 2006 debut record, “Unlabeled”. (co-produced by our good friend Adam Odor)

Stop by Lone Star Music to order a copy, today! Or, if you must download, it’s also available on iTunes.

Throwback Thursday: Cody Gill Band / Boxcars

Thursday, October 3rd, 2013

Cody Gill Band’s debut record, Boxcars, was one of our first packaging designs, and remains one of our favorites. The ornamental design on the front cover was pulled from a vintage book cover, with the addition on two strategically placed dice showing double sixes, or “Boxcars”. Also, each of the background textures were derived from vintage books in the Dodds vintage book collection.  Every scratch, fold, scuff, dirt or other gritty gem is authentic and from an old book sittin’ on the shelf at home.

You can download Boxcars on iTunes or pick up a hardcopy over at Lone Star Music!
